Bags to Benches – Good for Le Sueur, Good for the Environment
Protecting the environment is one of Rotary’s focus areas. In spring 2021, the Le Sueur Lion’s Club initiated the Bags to Benches recycling program. It was such a success the Le Sueur Rotary Club joined the recycling program a short time later. Now at least ten Le Sueur area non-profit youth and community organizations are collecting plastic film as part of the NexTrex® Plastic Bag & Film Recycling.
Plastic bags and film packaging are important durable and lightweight protection for food and merchandise in transit. But these materials SHOULD NOT be recycled in most curbside carts. Local businesses are collecting and Rademacher’s grocery store is providing a collection bin for individuals to recycle plastic bags and film.
Le Sueur Rotary and the other groups collect and weigh the plastic and take it to the recycling site. Trex grants each group a bench when 500 pounds of plastic film have been collected. Benches can be found along paths, streets and in parks in Le Sueur. More than four tons of plastic have been recycled in Le Sueur since spring 2021
How can you help recycle plastic and earn a bench?
