Backpack Weekend Nutrition Program
Every student has the potential to do well in school. However, some students are at risk for doing well because they lack good nutrition. Le Sueur Rotarians manage the Backpack Weekend Nutrition Program to meet the food needs of pre-kindergarten and elementary school students in Le Sueur and Henderson. About eight tons of food was provided to students and their families last year. Demand is up around 40% in the 2022-2023 school year.
Bags of shelf stable foods and fresh fruit from local and regional sources are packed and distributed weekly to children and youth during the school year. Special holiday and year-end packs provide food for families. Le Sueur Rotary partners with the Le Sueur Food shelf to provide vouchers for turkeys at Thanksgiving.
Even more children, youth, and families could benefit from the Backpack Weekend Nutrition Program with more funds to purchase food and more volunteers to pack food.
